Here at RED5 we’re pretty proud of the quality of toys and gadgets we have, but with the VEX Robotic Arm we think we’ve really excelled ourselves. Not only is it a super cool kit (but that goes without saying, right?) it’s also the winner of Educational Toy of the Year in the prestigious Toy of the Year Awards 2016. But never fear, its educational value definitely doesn’t come at the expense of the all-important fun factor.
Based on real industrial robotic arms – the kind that build cars, aeroplanes and top secret space vehicles – this VEX kit can be built by hand without the use of any tools, with components that simply snap together. It can lift any number of small household objects up to 35cm in the air and 25cm outwards with its precision opening claw attachment as well as rotating through a full 360°.
Should you become tired of playing with the fully functioning arm (or, like certain members of staff at RED5 you just like to build things) then many further hours of fun remain as you can create the additional two builds included in the kit, a chopper (as in “get to the chopper”) and a scorpion (as in a scorpion, only more roboty). If, sometime in the murky mists of the future, you exhaust all these possibilities then - like all VEX kits - the Robotic Arm can be redesigned and reassembled into a near infinite variety of wondrous shapes and forms, combining with other VEX sets. The only limit is your imagination (and the number of pieces you have).
